Tips & Tricks
Getting ready for a family photo shoot? Whether you're marking a special milestone or just cherishing those everyday moments, I’m here to share how we create beautiful, lasting images from your precious memories. Let’s dive into some essential tips to make your photo session as smooth and enjoyable as possible!
1. The Prep Work for your Family Photo Shoot: It’s All in the Details
Preparation sets the stage for a fantastic family photo shoot. Coordinating outfits is key, but there’s no need for everyone to match exactly. Choose a color palette that complements your family’s style and the location, but also one that reflects your family members individual personality types! This approach ensures your photos look both cohesive and natural.
2. Location, Location, Location
The right location can set the perfect tone for your photos. Whether you’re envisioning a sunlit field, an urban setting, or a cozy indoor space, I recommend picking a spot that reflects your family’s personality. I am here to help recommend locations too based on your vision! Remember, it’s not about finding the “perfect” location, but rather one that feels right for you and your loved ones.
3. Let Kids Be Kids and Have Fun
I say this all too often. Let. Your. Kids. Be. Kids.
Embrace their playful nature, have fun with them during the shoot. The best photos often come from those spontaneous moments of joy, laughter, and running around together. Quite frankly, kids are the best with photos when you let them shine in their natural essence. Don’t stress over perfect poses; instead, focus on capturing their natural charm and personality and I promise you the photos will be beautiful.
4. Knowing Your Kiddos: Timing and Snacks
Gnerally, the best time of the day for sessions is sunrise or sunset. If your kiddo is normally in bed by the time the session starts, I reccomend planning accordingly with a later nap, or finding a location that works with an earlier time of day to ensure they'll be their happiest selves! It's always a good idea to bring along snacks and drinks to keep them satisfied too! Keeping them comfortable and content helps the shoot go smoothly and keeps their spirits high.
5. Engage with Fun Activities
While not a necessity, having a fun activity to do together can be a great way to create a core memory for you and your family while having beautiful photos to document it. Here are some ideas!
Bubbles: Simple yet magical, bubbles are a fantastic way to capture playful moments. Kids love chasing and popping them, and the effect looks enchanting in photos.
Painting: A favorite! Bring your paint clothes and a white sheet to sit on and have fun!
Water Balloons: Perfect for warmer weather, water balloons add an element of fun and spontaneity. Just be prepared for some splashes and laughter!
Props and Toys: Bring along favorite toys or props that your kids enjoy. Whether it’s a beloved stuffed animal or a fun hat, these items can make the session more engaging and personal.
Picnic: Turn part of the shoot into a mini picnic. This not only gives kids a break but also creates opportunities for relaxed and natural photos.
The list for this is literally ENDLESS!
Above all, have fun!
The essence of a great family photo shoot lies in the joy and connection you share. Regardless of the stage your family is in—whether your kids are toddlers or teenagers—capturing these moments is invaluable.
Life moves so fast, and each stage brings its own special memories. These photos will be a beautiful reminder of the love and laughter that fills your life, preserving memories that will be cherished for years to come.
