Photography gear: What's in my camera bag

Hey everyone! I’m stoked to give you a peek into my gear bag and show you how each piece of equipment helps me capture the perfect shot. Whether I’m using my Canon 5D Mark IV or shooting film, I'm going to break down each piece of my gear and why I love it!

My main squeeze.
  • Canon Mark IV Camera Body

I absolutely love my Canon 5D Mark IV. It's a 30.4-megapixel full-frame camera that captures incredible detail and color. It's built to handle various weather conditions which makes it reliable for any occasion. It has dual slotted memory cards which in my opinion, is a MUST, especially if you shoot wedding photography. If you’re looking for a camera that delivers amazing results and stands up to the elements, this one is definitely worth considering.

Lenses

Your lens is just as, if not more important, than your camera body. Choosing the right lens is ESSENTIAL to your desired photography type.

  • Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM

Why I Love It: This lens is incredibly versatile, offering a wide to standard zoom range. The constant f/2.8 aperture provides excellent low-light performance and beautiful bokeh. It’s perfect for everything from portraits to landscapes and events.

  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM

Why I Love It: Known for its stunning sharpness and creamy bokeh, this lens is my go-to for portraits and low-light situations. The f/1.2 aperture allows for beautiful background blur and exceptional subject isolation.

  • Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

Why I Love It: This telephoto zoom lens is ideal for capturing distant subjects, whether I’m photographing wildlife or sports. The image stabilization and fast autofocus help ensure sharp images even at longer focal lengths.

  • Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Why I Love It: As a wide-angle zoom lens, the 17-40mm is perfect for capturing expansive landscapes, architecture, and tight interiors. Its wide field of view allows for creative compositions and dynamic perspectives.

Film Cameras

In addition to my digital gear, I also sometimes shoot with film cameras to capture the unique, nostalgic aesthetic that only film can provide.

My main film camera is the Canon AE-1, however I have quiete a few film cameras I experiment with too and even use disposables sometimes for that fun feel!

Additional gear
  • Backup Camera: A secondary digital camera body just in case.

  • Extra Batteries: Keep charged and always extras in bags.

  • Memory Cards: High-capacity and fast cards for ample storage and quick data transfer.

  • Lens Cleaning Kit: Includes a microfiber cloth, and cleaning solution to keep lenses spotless.

  • Tripod: For stable shots, especially in low light or for long exposures.

  • Camera Bag: Protects and organizes your gear with padded compartments and comfortable straps.

  • Filters: UV, polarizing, and ND filters to enhance your photos in various ways.

  • External Flash: Offers better control and lighting for portraits and low-light situations.

  • Backup Drive: Secure storage for backing up your photos to prevent data loss.

  • Lens Hood: Reduces lens flare and protects your lens from damage.

  • Camera Strap: A comfortable and secure strap for carrying your camera + an extra for backup!

  • Reflector: Useful for manipulating natural light and adding fill light to your shots.

  • Portable Power Bank: To charge your devices and accessories on the go.

  • Camera Hand Strap: Offers additional security and comfort for carrying your camera and is perfect for on the go.

And that wraps up the tour of what’s in my bag! While having the right gear is crucial, it’s important to remember that the equipment alone doesn’t make a great photograph. What truly sets a photo apart is the person behind the camera. The one who understands light, composition, and can bring creativity into any shot. It’s your vision, skill, and ability to see beyond the technical aspects that turn a good shot into something extraordinary. So, while I hope this gives you some insight into my gear, remember that the real magic happens when you combine the right tools with your passion and expertise. YOU are what can make a photo amazing, the camera is just there to assist with that. Happy shooting!
