If you’re planning a photoshoot in Central Texas, you picked a beautiful place. From rolling hills and wide open fields to lakes, oak trees, and golden sunsets, this area has so much variety. It also comes with a few quirks that are good to know ahead of time.

Whether you’re planning engagement photos, family photos, seniors, branding, or just updating your photos for this season of life, here’s everything you need to know to make your Central Texas photoshoot feel easy, fun, and stress free.

Best Time of Year for Photos in Central Texas

Central Texas is pretty much sunshine year round, but not all seasons photograph the same.

Spring is beautiful and a little unpredictable. Wildflowers are usually at their peak from late March through early May, depending on rain. This is when you’ll see bluebonnets and green fields, but it can also be windy and stormy.

Summer is hot. Like really hot. Early morning or sunset sessions are a must, especially June through September. The upside is golden light, long evenings, and clear skies. The perfect season for summer lake sessions or backyard sprinkler fun.

Fall is one of the best kept secrets here. October through early December brings cooler temps, softer light, and earthy tones. It’s a favorite for a reason. Green tones are harder to come by this time of year, but you'll have gorgeous fields and fall colors in its place.

Winter is mild compared to most places. January and February can be cooler and a little brown, but it’s perfect if you love a more neutral, minimal look and want fewer crowds.

Best Time of Day for Your Photoshoot

Light matters more than almost anything else.

Sunset sessions are hands down the most popular in Central Texas. The light is soft, warm, and flattering, especially in open fields and hill country locations.

Sunrise sessions are quieter and cooler, which is amazing during warmer months. They also work great for places that get crowded later in the day.

Midday sessions can work great for some sessions, but they require very intentional locations, I typically only recommend this time of day if you're okay with getting creative with shadows or wanting an indoor session!

What to Wear for Central Texas Photos

Neutral tones photograph beautifully here. Think creams, tans, browns, soft greens, and muted blues.

I always recommend avoiding heavy logos, neon colors, and super busy patterns. These tend to distract from the moment and don’t age quite as well.

Flowy fabrics move beautifully in the breeze, which we definitely get plenty of here. Comfort matters too. If you feel good, it will show in your photos. I recommend taking the time to test out your outfit a couple of weeks in advance to be sure you really love it!

If you’re still unsure, you can always send me photos of potential outfit ideas and we can brainstorm together!

Location Ideas Around Central Texas

One of the best parts about shooting here is the variety.

Open fields and ranch land are perfect for that timeless Texas feel.

Hill Country locations offer rolling landscapes, cliffs, and incredible sunset views.

Lakes and rivers add reflections, texture, and a more adventurous vibe.

Urban spots like downtown areas bring a modern, editorial feel.

I always help choose locations based on your vision, the season, and the type of session we’re shooting. This is one of the most important things I want you to love!

Weather Tips You’ll Be Glad You Knew

Central Texas weather can change quickly. It’s not unusual to see sun, clouds, and wind all in one session.

A little wind is actually great for photos, especially with movement and flowy outfits. Embrace the messy hair that may come with it.

Cloudy skies can be beautiful and soft, so don’t stress if it’s not perfectly sunny. I even love shooting in the rain for the right session!

If weather ever becomes unsafe or truly unworkable, we reschedule. Simple as that!

How to Prepare for Your Session

Hydrate beforehand, especially in warmer months. Taking photos can be tiring at times, it's always a good idea to bring snacks for your littles, or yourself!

Trust the process. You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do. I'll guide, observe, and talk A LOT! If you still feel awkward, just look over at me, I'm likely goblin squatting yelling SO CUTEEE!

My best advice? Just be present. The best photos happen when you’re focused on each other, not the camera.
