Weddings + Elopements, tips & tricks
Eloping is all about intimacy and personal connection, and there’s something incredibly special about capturing those moments through photos. As a photographer who loves documenting elopements, I’m excited to share some tips to help make your elopement photos as heartfelt and memorable as your love story. With that being said, here is my Photographers guide to documenting your elopement
1. Choose a Meaningful Location
Your elopement location should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Whether it’s a secluded beach, a picturesque mountain view, or a charming forest, pick a spot that feels right for you both. If you’re eloping in the fall, a place with vibrant autumn leaves can add a magical touch to your photos. In spring, look for places bursting with flowers and fresh greenery. The setting should enhance your personal style and help tell your story.
2. Natural Light
Natural light can make your photos look warm and genuine. Plan your elopement to take advantage of the best light—golden hour, which is right after sunrise or before sunset, offers a soft, romantic glow. If your elopement takes place in a place with less natural light, don’t worry. Talk to your photographer about how to make the most of the lighting available to ensure your photos capture the true essence of your day.
3. Be Prepared for the Weather
Weather can add its own unique charm to your elopement, so be ready to embrace it no matter what. If you’re eloping in winter, the snow can create a cozy, enchanting atmosphere. For a summer elopement, staying cool and comfortable will help you look your best in photos. Don’t forget to consider the possibility of rain—it can actually make for some incredibly romantic and dramatic shots. If rain is in the forecast, plan for it with stylish umbrellas or raincoats that complement your look. Having a flexible backup plan ensures that no matter what the weather brings, you’ll still have beautiful, memorable photos that capture the essence of your special day.
4. Include Personal Activities and Touches
Eloping is a great chance to infuse your day with activities that reflect your unique relationship. Think about what you both love to do together—whether it's a scenic hike, a cozy picnic, or a playful adventure. Incorporating these activities will not only make your day memorable but also add a fun and personal element to your photos. Showcasing your favorite shared experiences will highlight the genuine joy and connection you share.
5. Enjoy Every Moment
Finally, remember that your elopement is about celebrating your love in a way that feels right for you. Enjoy the moment, and let the day unfold naturally. While having beautiful photos is wonderful, the real magic comes from the joy and connection you share. Your photographer will be there to capture those authentic, heartfelt moments that truly represent your love story.
