The Best Photoshoot Locations in Texas

One of the coolest things about Texas is how wildly different the landscapes are depending on where you go. Within a few hours you can go from desert mountains to white sand dunes, coastal beaches, deep canyons, and rolling green hills.

Because of that, Texas is honestly one of the best states for destination photoshoots. Whether you're planning engagement photos, portraits, family, or just documenting a season of life, there are so many places that create incredible backdrops.

These are some of the most iconic photoshoot locations across Texas that always make for beautiful images. Here are my personal favorites for the best photoshoot locations in Texas.

Big Bend and the West Texas Desert

My personal favorite. West Texas feels like a completely different world compared to the rest of the state, compared to the rest of the country for that matter. The desert landscapes around Big Bend are full of massive mountain views, winding roads, huge open skies, and golden desert light that feels cinematic. It’s the kind of place where the scenery alone makes photos feel dramatic and adventurous. Nearby towns like Marfa add another layer to the area with their quiet desert roads, art inspired architecture, and wide open landscapes.

If you're looking for a location that feels wild, remote, and unforgettable, West Texas is hard to beat.

Monahans Sandhills

Monahans Sandhills State Park

Most people don’t expect to find sand dunes in Texas, but Monahans looks like something straight out of another country. The rolling dunes stretch for miles and create a really minimal, super editorial setting for photos. With nothing but soft sand and sky around you, the focus stays entirely on the people in the frame.

Sunset/sunrise here is especially beautiful when the light hits the curves of the dunes and creates shadows across the sand. It is easily one of the most iconic locations in all of Texas.

Palo Duro Canyon

Often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the state. The canyon walls are full of red rock cliffs, layered ridges, and winding trails that make photos feel epic and cinematic. At golden hour the sunlight hits the rocks and turns everything warm and glowing.

Texas Hill Country

The Hill Country is probably one of the most recognizable landscapes in Texas.

Rolling hills, limestone cliffs, rivers, and winding country roads make this area perfect for natural, romantic sessions. In the spring, wildflowers cover the fields and create the kind of scenery people picture when they think of Texas.

There’s also so much variety throughout the Hill Country that every session can feel a little different.

The Texas Coast

The Texas coastline stretches for hundreds of miles and offers some beautiful beach landscapes for photos. Sand, sea grass, dunes, and the open horizon create a really relaxed and natural setting. Beach sessions tend to feel slower and more peaceful, especially around sunrise or sunset when the light is soft over the water.

It’s a perfect option for couples who love the ocean or want something simple and timeless.

Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake feels unlike anywhere else in Texas.

It's located in East Texas near the Louisiana border, the lake is known for its towering cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, winding waterways, and a quiet swamp like atmosphere. The scenery here feels almost otherworldly, especially in the early morning when fog sits over the water.

Because of the unique landscape, photos here have a really cinematic and moody feel. It’s an incredible spot for couples who want something artistic and a little different from the typical Texas backdrop. Kayaks or small boats can also add a really cool storytelling element to sessions here.

Hamilton Pool

Hamilton Pool is easily one of the most unique natural landmarks in Texas.

The turquoise water, limestone cave, and waterfall create a backdrop that almost feels tropical. The curved rock ceiling and reflection in the water make for some really beautiful, dramatic images. It’s a great location for couples who want something a little adventurous and different.

Salt Flats at Guadalupe Mountains

Salt Basin Dunes

Tucked along the edge of the Guadalupe Mountains sits one of the most surreal landscapes in Texas. The Salt Basin Dunes are made of bright white gypsum sand that stretches across the desert floor and contrasts beautifully with the surrounding mountains. The light here reflects off the sand in a way that makes everything feel soft and glowing, especially during sunset. Lost Maples

Lost Maples State Natural Area

One of the most unique things about Lost Maples is that it’s one of the few places in Texas where you can see vibrant fall color. During autumn, the maple trees turn shades of red, orange, and gold which creates a completely different look than most Texas landscapes.

The park also has beautiful limestone cliffs and river areas that make it great for nature focused sessions.

Enchanted Rock

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Enchanted Rock is one of the most iconic places in Central Texas.

The massive pink granite dome rises above the surrounding hills and gives you sweeping views once you reach the top. Sunset sessions here are especially beautiful as the sky lights up over the landscape. It’s a great location for couples who want scenic photos with a little bit of adventure.
