A Local Photographer’s Guide to My Favorite Locations

One of the most common questions I get when someone books a session is“Do you have any location recommendations?”

The short answer is yes. Lots.

One of the reasons I love photographing in Central Texas is because there is such a huge variety of landscapes within a short drive. We have lakes, cliffs, creeks, fields, downtown areas, and some really beautiful hidden spots that photograph incredibly well.

Whether you're planning engagement photos, portraits, or a family session, these are some of my favorite places around Central Texas that consistently create beautiful images. So here's my guide to the best photoshoot locations in Central Texas.

Miller Springs Nature Center

This is easily one of my favorite locations in the area. It has a little bit of everything. Open fields, tall grass, cliffs, wooded trails, and beautiful light in the evenings.

It’s especially good for couples and engagement sessions because we can move around quite a bit during the session and get a lot of variety without having to travel to multiple places. Sunset here is really beautiful, and the overlook views make for some incredible wide scenic photos.

Temple Lake Park

Temple Lake Park is one of those locations that works well year round. It sits right along the lake and has open grassy areas, trees, and water views.

I love using this location, it feels relaxed and natural. It works really well for families, couples, and portraits, anyone who wants something simple and insanely scenic.

Sunset sessions here tend to have really soft light reflecting off the water which photographs beautifully.

Downtown Belton and Nolan Creek

Downtown Belton is such a fun option if you want something that feels a little more urban and relaxed. The historic buildings, little walkways, and the creek running through town give it a lot of character.

Along Nolan Creek there are stone walls, bridges, and shaded areas that make great photo spots. Then we can walk a few blocks and capture photos along the streets and storefronts.

This location works really well for couples and families who want something casual and storytelling based. We can get ice cream, wander through the park, play with cool lighting, it's a perfect spot when you want something easy with things to do.

Downtown Salado and Pace Park

Salado has a unique feel compared to a lot of towns in the area. The historic buildings, trees, and creek running through town make it really charming.

Pace Park sits right along the water and has open grassy areas, large trees, and stone walkways. It feels peaceful and slow paced which makes sessions here feel really natural.

If you want a mix of nature and small town charm, Salado is a great option. Salado can get really busy on weekends, so it's best to plan a weekday here.

Georgetown Lake and Overlook Park

If you're looking for dramatic views and cliffs overlooking water, this area is beautiful.

Overlook Park sits above Lake Georgetown and offers wide open views that are incredible at sunset. The trails around the lake also give us wooded areas and natural scenery that work really well for engagement photos and adventurous sessions.

It’s a great choice if you want photos that feel a little more outdoorsy and scenic.

Overlook Park in Belton

This overlook sits above the lake and gives you one of the best sunset views in the area.

It’s a great location if you want something simple but dramatic with water and sky views behind you. I especially love this location for couples/family sessions because the light at golden hour is really beautiful here. It's a really easy walk from the parking lot too making it easily accessible.

Downtown Temple/Santa Fe Plaza

Downtown Temple is a really fun spot for an urban feel. Theres some fun parking garages here to for those wanting a shoot like that too! There's also a train station that runs right through downtown with a little park next to it. This is a great spot for really anyone and the possibilities are endless here. It tends to be pretty slow here too so scheduling is pretty easy!

Oakmont Park

Oakmont Park is a really versatile location that works well for families and seniors.

There are open grassy areas, large trees, and trails that give us a lot of options for backgrounds. It’s easy to walk around and find little pockets of good light which makes sessions here feel really relaxed.

Stillhouse Hollow Lake

Stillhouse is one of my favorite lakes in the area. It has beautiful water views, rocky shoreline areas, and some really nice spots for sunrise/sunset.

This location works really well for couples sessions and engagement photos where you want a more natural outdoor feel.

Chalk Ridge Falls

If you want something a little more adventurous, Chalk Ridge Falls is a really fun option.

There are wooded trails, bridges, and waterfalls which make the scenery feel very different from a typical park session. It’s especially pretty in the spring when everything is green.

Because of the hiking involved, this location works best for couples, indivduals or adventurous families who are comfortable walking a bit during the session.

Mother Neff State Park

Mother Neff is actually one of the oldest state parks in Texas, and it has some really beautiful natural scenery.

There are limestone cliffs, wooded trails, and open areas that photograph really well. If you're looking for something that feels more like a nature escape, this is a great location.

It’s especially pretty in the fall when the leaves start changing.

Magnolia Market in Waco

For something a little different, Magnolia Market in Waco can be a really fun location for photos. The iconic silos, open green space, and modern buildings give the area a very clean editorial feel. It works really well for couples who want something unique and recognizable. For individuals/seniors, etc. It can be really busy on the weekends, so it's best to plan for a weekday or morning here.

Less known Locations

Hidden parts of the lake, waterfalls, fields, off the path trails, creeks, etc.

I spend a lot of time location scouting for less known locations to take my clients to. I have so many in Central Texas and when we start talking about the vision for your session, I'll often recommend one of my less known locations if it fits what you have in mind. The possibilities are endless here.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Session - Best photoshoot locations in Central Texas

The best location for your photos really depends on the kind of feeling you want your gallery to have. If you want something natural and scenic, lake overlooks and nature trails are perfect. If you want something relaxed and storytelling focused, downtown areas like Belton, Salado or Temple can be really fun. And if you want something a little iconic or unique, places like Magnolia Market, parking garages, or dramatic landscapes offer a completely different vibe. Whenever you book a session with me, I help narrow down the best location based on the season, the lighting, and the overall feel you want for your photos. Central Texas has so many beautiful spots, and half the fun is finding the place that feels the most like you. If you're planning engagement photos, portraits, family, or a couples session anywhere around Central Texas, I’d love to help you create something amazing.
