What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

One of the first questions I get after someone books a session is always the same.
“What should we wear?”
It’s a good question!! What you wear can completely change how your photos feel. The goal isn’t to show up in something trendy or perfectly styled. It’s to wear something that feels like you, photographs well, and lets the connection between you and your people be the focus.
Whether you’re planning engagement photos, family photos, portraits, or just a couples session, here are a few things that always work. What to wear for your photoshoot
Start with One Outfit You Love
If you’re planning outfits for more than one person, start with one piece you really love.
Maybe it’s a dress you’ve been waiting for an excuse to wear, a favorite sweater, or something that just feels good on you. Once you have that piece, it becomes much easier to build the rest of the outfits around it.
Trying to plan everyone’s outfits at once usually just makes it overwhelming.
Neutral and Earthy Tones Always Photograph Beautifully
In my experience photographing couples, families, and portraits across Texas and beyond, colors that photograph without fail no matter the location tend to be neutral and earthy tones.
Think things like:
• cream
• beige
• rust
• olive
• soft blues
• muted greens
• warm browns
These tones photograph beautifully in nature and tend to age well. Super bright neons or heavy patterns can sometimes pull attention away from the people in the photo. With that being said, bold can make sense in certain instances like a fashion or editorial shoot.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
The biggest myth in photoshoot styling is that everyone should match.
Instead of everyone wearing the same color, aim for colors that complement each other.
For example:
• one person in a neutral dress
• another in denim and a soft sweater
• someone else in a textured layer like a cardigan or jacket
Different textures and layers add depth to photos and make everything feel more natural.
Movement Makes Photos Better
This is something people don’t always think about, but it makes a huge difference.
Outfits that move tend to photograph beautifully. Flowing dresses, loose fabrics, or anything that catches the wind can add so much life to a photo.
When we’re walking, spinning, or just moving naturally during your session, those little moments of movement create magic.
Comfort Matters More Than You Think
If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit, pulling something up, or feeling uncomfortable, it will show.
The best photos happen when you can move freely and focus on the experience instead of what you're wearing.
Choose something that you can sit in, walk in, and laugh in without thinking twice.
Layers and Texture Add Depth
Adding a few layers can elevate photos instantly.
Things like:
• jackets
• cardigans
• hats
• textured fabrics like linen, knits, or denim
These elements add dimension and make photos feel more natural and editorial.
Think About the Location
Outfits that feel connected to the environment always photograph best.
For example:
Wildflower sessions in Texas tend to look beautiful with soft colors and flowy pieces.
Mountain sessions work well with layers, sweaters, and earthy tones.
Beach sessions often look best with lighter fabrics and simple silhouettes.
If you're unsure what works best for your specific location, I’m always happy to help you plan outfits for your photoshoot.
The Best Photos Happen When You Feel Like Yourself - What to wear for your photoshoot
At the end of the day, the best outfit for your photoshoot is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
The goal of your session isn’t perfect styling. It’s capturing real moments and connection.
Your outfits should support that, not distract from it.
If you’re ever unsure what to wear for your engagement photos, family photos, portraits, or couples session, I’m always happy to help you build outfits that photograph beautifully.
And honestly, sometimes sending me a few options and asking “which one?” is the easiest way to decide.
If you’re planning a photoshoot in Texas or anywhere I’m traveling this year, you can reach out anytime. I'd love to bring your vision to life and create photos that feel like you.
